Get at least two estimates for the cost of your move and look for moving companies with affiliations to the major van line systems such as United Van Lines.

To avoid confusion, make certain that you clearly indicate what will and will not be moved to the Moving Consultant. You should also provide the destination address so that the Moving Consultant can take into consideration the access and therefore provide you with a more accurate estimate.

If moving from or to a high-rise complex, make certain that you make arrangements for uninterrupted elevator and loading/unloading area access.

Make certain that your key exchange on a house purchase is coordinated properly. Keep in mind that if the key is delayed, you will be paying for waiting time.

According to the "Dangerous Goods Act", there are certain items that cannot be transported on a moving van. Some of these items include fire extinguishers, aerosol cans, bleach and even propane barbecue tanks. Ask your Moving Consultant for a complete listing of these items.

Many people ask about "insurance" for their goods while being moved. First and foremost, moving companies do not sell insurance…insurance companies do! Moving companies offer "valuation" or "protection" for your goods. Discuss this aspect with your Moving Consultant and contact your insurance broker to see if your homeowner's policy covers your goods being loaded, transported and unloaded by a professional moving company. This can save you money.
